PROBLEM SOLVERS WANTED. We're looking for smart, talented candidates who agree that America has more problems than we should tolerate, but who also understand that there are plenty of solutions to these problems that we should be putting to use. Whether you are a recent college graduate, or have years of professional experience, if you are ready to tackle some of America’s most pressing problems apply for a position with U.S. PIRG today.
Stop The Overuse Of Antibiotics
The overuse of antibiotics is contributing to the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, leading the World Health Organization to warn that, “without urgent, coordinated action … the world is headed for a post-antibiotic era.” If we don’t take action soon, these lifesaving medicines could stop working. More than 70% of antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used on livestock, and are often given to healthy animals to make them grow fatter, faster. So we’re calling on the Obama administration to stop the reckless overuse of antibiotics on factory farms.
Help Get Big Money Out Of Our Democracy
The Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision opened the gates for Super PACs and mega-donors to flood our elections with big money. But in its wake, a national movement has grown to overturn this wrong-headed decision. We’ve helped to organize 16 states and more than 550 towns and cities to go on record for a constitutional amendment to restore Democracy for the People, and we’re just getting started.
We Need 21st Century Transportation Solutions
Americans are driving fewer miles than they have in decades, and led by the millennial generation, are favoring options such as public transportation, biking, and ride-sharing. But despite this, we’re still spending too much on highway expansion projects, instead of investing in alternatives or repairing the roads and bridges we’ve already got. Through research and advocacy, we highlight these changing trends for policymakers, and advocate for a 21st century transportation system.
Bring Down The Cost Of Higher Education
The cost of higher education in America keeps rising, and as a result, more students than ever must rely on student loans to pay for a college degree. We’re working to keep student loans affordable by keeping interest rates at a reasonable level, increasing grant aid, making textbooks affordable, and providing resources for students to protect themselves from predatory lenders.
The recent financial crisis and the deep recession that followed in its wake delivered a devastating blow to American households. And today, years after the crisis, too many Americans continue to find it difficult and costly to navigate our financial system. At PIRG, we convince our leaders to stop unfair banking practices and to empower consumers in the marketplace.
Let's Label GMOs
We should have the right to know what’s in our food. But too often, we’re denied basic information about whether food we buy for our families and for ourselves is made with genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Meanwhile, more than 90% of the public polled supports labeling foods that contain GMOs. We’re calling on lawmakers and grocery stores to respond to this overwhelming consumer demand and give us the right to know what we’re eating.
